USA going down, down, down and further down. Things are looking rather grim. A couple more golds would bring us up near the top but right now things are not looking very good.

Lots of bronze. Not a lot of silver or gold. The speed skaters were a big disappointment, as was Shawn White.

Just how has the US been destroyed at the Olympics?
The Olympics used to be about amateurs representing their country and just participating was good enough for all. What kind of country have we become when we complain about the showing of athletes in the Olympics?

What kind of country have we become when we complain about the showing of athletes in the Olympics? I don't think the athletes have ever been satisfied with just competing. Elite athletes don't have the 'everybody gets a trophy' mindset. They want to win. For spectators, it's become a political statement.

The U.S. hockey team has NHL players,I wouldnt call them amateurs. The only ones that are REALLY interested in the outcome of these games are the sponsors.

Many NHL players are playing for other countries as well, not just the U.S. I've never liked the idea of pros of any sport participating in the Olympics. I believe the Olympics should be limited to amateur athletes only.

At one time I thought it was limited to amateurs only. I am not certain when it changed.

At one time I thought it was limited to amateurs only. I am not certain when it changed. I think it was a result of some of the Communist countries sponsoring 'full time' amateur athletes, where they were basically supported by the state.

We are number two now. At least for awhile. If Russia or Canada get another gold then we will lose that slot, unless we kick more butt and also get another gold.

I always thought it was for the amateurs too but somewhere along the line the Olympic committee made the changes.

I still liked the Cuban guy that ran backwards, If I remember correctly he was also barefoot, but I may be wrong about that. I am guessing it was 1959 but could be wrong on that too. I suppose I could google it, but just did not feel like it right now.

It was the 1904 Olympics. He was known as Felix Carvajal. A postal worker from Cuba. He came in fourth. He did run backwards at times, ran off the track to pick some apples to eat. (gave him a stomach ache). He was ahead until he did that. He reached in the vehicle of some Olympic officials and grabbed some peaches also. He wore shoes, I was wrong about being barefoot. There are some interesting stories surrounding that race. Things were very interesting in 1904.
